Lagos State governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, has adopted the best graduating student of the Lagos State University (LASU), Fuad Adetoro and promised to sponsor his Master’s degree in any University of his choice. Also added, was a cash gift of N5 Million naira for blazing the trail against all odds.
This gesture came as a result of the inspiring speech delivered by Fuad at his valedictory speech where he narrated how he battled with cataract he inherited from his father and had to undergo two surgeries to have the eyes defects corrected. This, he said disrupted his academic pursuit for 3 years. He thereby, sought an opportunity to have his Master’s degree abroad.
According to the Governor, “Lagos State Government does not generally give scholarship anymore but only bursary. So, I adopt him.
“His story is too compelling and it reflects on my own story. So, any university he wants to go, I will do it personally; I will be responsible.
“In addition to that, because he is the best graduating student, I dash him N5million,”
Fuad, who graduated from the Faculty of Management Sciences, was announced as the best graduating student having scored a CGPA of 4.78 out of the 21,481 students that bagged first degree awards at the convocation ceremony.
About 29,710 students graduated with 201 awarded diploma; 21,481 first degrees; 7,982 Post Graduate Diploma (PGD); and 46 Doctorate Degrees. Total number of students that graduated with First Class were 26.
The Governor assured the school of the commencement of work on the university’s 6,000 capacity hostel within the next few months. He also pledged the support of his administration to give necessary support that will see to the accreditation of all courses in the University
While speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor of the school, Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun said the graduants have been found worthy in learning and character, saying they have been adequately schooled to contribute to the development of the country
