How To Make Yourself Indispensable At Work

As the world becomes more globalized, the nineteen century indispensable employees are becoming irrelevant. This is so because information, profession, expertise and skills that were once known sort after are common- place- today, giving rise to a cut throat competition in academics, business and the corporate world. Therefore, to stand out and become indispensable, particularly at your place of work, it is pertinent that you take charge of who you are, what you do and how you show up. This begins with making a great name for yourself- creating the impression on those around you that you have what it takes to succeed.

In view of the above, here are some ways to position yourself as an indispensable member of a team.

  1. Go the extra mile and work hard

To position yourself as an employee whose name will not be easily remembered when making the list of staff to be laid off, you must work hard at delivering on your core job functions and go beyond your call of duties. It doesn’t matter your job role in the organization, create a positive impact on the jobs of other. For example, a security guard who assists in the sales of a company’s products stands a better chance of retaining his job than a counterpart who believes his job starts and ends up at the entrance of the office.

  1. Make every mistake a learning point

“A teachable spirit and a humbleness to admit your ignorance or your mistake will save you a lot of pain. However, if you’re a person who knows it all, the you’ve got a lot of heavy hearted experiences coming your way”. Do not be too ashamed to accept your mistakes. However, bad the experiences learn to look at and grow from it.

  1. Add value to others

To be indispensable, you must have something the organization wants. Be the go-to person for your colleagues. Be the one people reach out to for solution. Be available to coach and mentor people for an improved performance.

 

  1. Be honest

Rather than being “smart” when you make mistakes or took a bad business decision, be honest. Let people know it was not an intentional act and work hard to proffer solution. Once this is established, people will respect you for your openness.

  1. Be appreciative of those around you

There is no better way to gain respect than to acknowledge and appreciate those around you. Everybody loves to be respected and appreciated irrespective of age or grade. Be a reflection of what you want to see in others!  Therefore, if you want respect, respect others, if you want to be appreciated, appreciate others.

  1. Stay positive

It’s easy to become so focused on the finish line that you fail to enjoy the journey. Stay positive and be fun to work with as you’re making your way to the top. Often times, those who go around saying they are indispensable never really are. Being indispensable does not come from ego but from what others think about you as you help them succeed.
