Last year, while I was attending a business conference, the Guest Speaker made a statement that took the day. He said, “desktop is the new offline, the world has gone mobile!”. This statement struck a chord within me as it was clear the speaker was trying to overstate the glaring importance of giving business and startups digital life via the tenets of digital marketing.
In today’s world, everybody has truly gone mobile, such that no brand can seldom survive and thrive without using these tenets and truths of digital marketing to stake a presence on the world wide web.
Without further ado, here is a list of 7 things you as an entrepreneur, business development manager or startup owner should understand about the state of digital marketing in 2018:
1. Marketing yourself is as important as marketing your brand
As important it is for your business to have its presence felt in the market, it is equally important to let people know about you. A strong presence on the internet can be a great plus point during the launch of your brand/product/service.
I read this one post by some guy online who was a digital marketer about building online presence. I’d like to share the strategy with you guys here. What he did was he created a strong online presence online using social media, and his writing/blogging skills. By the time he was ready to launch his startup, he had a huge audience already.
These people already knew the person, so the chances of them trying his service/product at least once were already high than any of his competitors. You get the point?
2. Social networking is an investment that pays BIG
The biggest strength of an entrepreneur is the ability to make smart investments. And trust me when I say that investing time on social media and social networking can prove to be the best investment you will ever make on yourself. There are two reasons for it.
Firstly it gives you an opportunity to showcase your mettle, your thoughts and your skill to people, people who include those who follow your brand and those who even do not!
Secondly, it gives you an opportunity to connect with influencers, common people and everyone alike. You can use the feedback of people to improve your skillset. You can ask for advice from influencers to help you get started with your entrepreneurial venture or improve what you are doing (in case you have already started).
There is a whole new world waiting for you to learn from, but only if you can use the power of online marketing in the rightful manner.
3. Having a Mobile Optimization Strategy is not Optional
The most recent major change in the digital landscape is that mobile search has finally surpassed desktop. As a testament to this fact, Google’s latest algorithm update made us all very aware that our websites need to be designed in a mobile friendly format. And what happens if you DO NOT do this? – Well, your business can suffer the consequences of users being dissatisfied and bouncing back to search results.
Look around you, people today live their lives through their mini pocket computer smartphone screens. They use their phones to search for answers to just about anything they want to know, do or buy. In 2018, consumers expect a comprehensive and seamless site experience across all devices.
In fact, Google is focusing on mobile so much that, founder Larry Page encourages his engineers and product managers to spend a minimum of one day a week working solely from their mobile devices.
It is therefore not illogical to conclude that a company that does not include mobile search as part of their marketing strategy will eventually be left behind by their more innovative and agile competitors. In order to stay ahead of the digital curve, all businesses must have a mobile friendly website going forward.
4. Digital marketing is not PR
But one important thing to remember here is that digital marketing is not really PR. There is a great difference between the two. While PR is more about spreading positive words about the person, digital marketing is to let people know about your beliefs thoughts. In simpler words it’s more of story telling — the story about you.
Today’s people are too smart to get influenced by those hardcore marketing gimmicks stating — I’m the best and I’m the greatest. People will automatically connect with you if they can relate with your thoughts and the cause you are working for. You don’t have to be fake.
Just be you, and there will be millions of people with similar thoughts and interests! (waiting to be part of your network. You have to just hit the right trigger)
5. Great Content equals Great Rewards
Truth is, Digital Marketing and Content Marketing are the same thing. You need to have content to have a presence in the digital world.
Content. It’s everywhere you look, a “how-to” blog, a blog comparing products, a blog from an expert, infographics, tweets, status updates, images, pins, pictures, videos, memes, GIFs.
You’ve read and seen all of these and by now you realize that this is what powers the web. This is what gets visitors to your website. Those visitors, who in turn, will love your content so much share it with their friends and the rest of the internet.
Like the name itself says — it’s “social” media (which is the most important aspect of digital marketing) – such that when using it, you don’t have to focus on just creating interesting content. It is also equally important to share whatever you think is going to be an interesting thing for your niche.
For instance, if you find a great article or some groundbreaking research about something you must share it with people in your network. At the same time, you must also keep sharing recent updates about what you are doing. Let people know that you are actively working on something. Engage in conversations with them, ask for their feedback, reply to their comments and tell them that you are listening.
This is an ideal situation, and not completely out of reach. It’s all about content, after all, and delivering the most unique and shareable content is the key to making your business noticed on the web.
6. Start Well, then, be consistent.
Do not waste your money by plunging into the pool of digital marketing without a professional guide in accompaniment. This is important towards starting well and right and then maintaining a pace of spend that suits your budget, brand and expectation.
Sometimes, digital marketing is a continuum. Think of companies like Pepsi and Coca Cola who always have several marketing campaigns per year that each promote a specific product in several ways.
You may have a lot of twitter followers, but how do you convert them to buy? You may get them to your website, but will you keep them there? Are you developing a way to move visitors through the sales funnel on your website?
The thing about this all is that you don’t have to know it all. There are people who specialize in this space that are able to provide you with way more strategies and campaigns than you ever dreamed. Digital marketing can not only boost your sales ROI, but also your brand’s ROI.
7. Digital Marketing is no ROCKET SCIENCE
To get 100% success with your digital marketing endeavors, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to be good at Digital Marketing!
The secret recipe to becoming successful is that there is no secret recipe. You just have to be good – by good, I mean consistency with professional application of the keys (stated above) to hone reach and visibility amongst the ever present audience – appealing to their attention!
In today’s world you ought to look at digital marketing as a community center or more of a social club of the old times where people used to go and socialize. The only difference is that internet has brought the world closer, giving you the superpower to connect with like minded people from the world over.
By investing time and effort on digital marketing, you can eventually have a strong presence within the social community. And it can be the first important step to your entrepreneurial aspirations.
In conclusion, we must agree that in today’s competitive world, we must remember — it is your personal brand that differentiates you from others. So, you need to use the power of digital marketing to stand out in the crowd.
